history
From the moment Kali Morana was born, she was labeled an outcast. Her entire coven--the Eclaircir--shunned her, and all with good reason. This particular group of witches was known for its mastery of dark magic and cruelty. It was one of the most powerful covens in the city of New Orleans; it was said that a single witch could eliminate an entire mob of people, simply because they could. So to have a child born under the alignment of the Nammuan nebula--something considered sacred amongst the Eclaircian's pure rivals: the Lumians--the possibilities were catastrophic for the clan.
All too aware of the Eclaircir coven's intentions to eliminate her daughter, Kali's mother quickly devised a plan to both do the job for them and save her little girl. She crossed over the imaginary boundaries between the Eclaricirian territory and the Lumian territory, a dangerous feat within itself, and left her daughter in her enemy’s possession. She left no note or method of identification with the two-year-old girl. The Lumiar coven could do with Kali what they pleased; it was no longer any of her concern.
Rather than kill her on sight, like Kali’s mother expected them to do—and as far as she is concerned, they did—the Lumians welcomed young Kali with open arms. Seeing as how they knew nothing about the girl, it would have been a waste to kill her. They instead allowed her to stay with a young couple and provided her with a new name: Vita Roxanne, a name comprised of those of two witches held in very high esteem.
Vita Roxanne grew up as a normal Lumian witchling like the other children. She learned to master potions of all sorts, and she was taught every elemental spell known amongst the coven. By learning these things, she was preparing for her training when she chose a field to specialize in after she underwent the Lumiar coven’s Witching Ritual, a rite of passage in which she and several others would become full-fledged witches.
As she grew older, the young brunette began to see the differences between herself and her peers. While all the others had blonde hair and green eyes, for example, she had dark brown hair and blue eyes. However, this was not the only thing that set them apart. She could just tell that she wasn't normal. It always felt as if she didn't belong in this coven, like she was meant to be with another group--or, most likely, on her own. She could see it in the elders' eyes especially. She was different....
When she turned thirteen years old, Vita was certain that she figured out what it was that made her so separated from everyone else. There was a girl named Lorraine whom she studied with very often, and over time they became close friends. Vita looked forward to talking to her every day; she noticed that her heart would pound whenever Lorraine came near her, and it would skip whenever their gazes met. It was an unbelievable feeling just to sit beside her and watch her, which Vita enjoyed doing very much. The brunette supposed she knew, in a way, that it was wrong. But she didn't care. She was happy--though it hurt when Lorraine wouldn't look at her the same way--and that was all that mattered.
The day of the Ritual started as a beautiful one. The sun was shining, the birds were singing… everything seemed perfect. The witchlings lined up one by one, preparing for the sacred chant blessed upon them that would make them full-fledged witches—Lorraine stood beside Vita, which made the dark-haired girl especially nervous. The Head of the clan stepped forward and opened the sacred tome holding all of the Lumiar coven’s secrets, then began to speak the holy verses.
But suddenly Vita froze.
Her mind became shrouded in darkness; she could hear screams of horror, saw evil figures with blazing red eyes and wicked smiles, teeth flashing menacingly. A bone-chilling voice, deep as cannot be described, echoed in her ear—it spoke of a terror among them, something that would destroy their clan and eliminate their way of life. It was like her own life passed before Vita’s eyes, though surely it could not be her own. A birth under a Lumian symbol; the Eclaircir clan’s (the enemy of the Lumians!) plans to kill the child; a winding journey through a dark forest before suddenly stopping, dropped upon sacred grounds; a name…. Kali Morana.
With that, light broke through, erasing everything in its path—erasing the truth from Vita’s gaze. The dark brunette was brought back to reality in an instant; freed from the terrors that she could no longer bring back. But reality, it seemed, had shifted. She stood in the middle of a forest, with no one else around for what seemed like for miles. At her feet there was a burned and tattered tome with a note tucked inside. Vita Roxanne, it simply read. There was nothing else included. She figured that was her name, since she had lost her memory and had no recollection of anything.
As if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred, Vita picked up the book and walked forward in an unknown direction. When she was tired of walking, she sat and studied the book’s contents. She found that she could read the unusual language it was written in; she taught herself simple spells, particularly those of Light and Healing, since they seemed to be the easiest for her. She travelled for miles this way, meeting strange peoples who took her in—apparently the book was useful in another sense, seeing how many seemed to recognize it though the owner had no clue what its use was.
In the course of five years, Vita found herself in the city of New Orleans. While it was louder and busier than what she was used to, she immediately fell in love with the place. She discovered that the people were hospitable for the most part, though they didn’t go out of their way to assist her like the people in the forest did. It was a lot to take in, though. She gradually discovered how things worked in this strange place. For one thing, sleeping on the ground wasn’t considered normal. Also, one had to get a “job” in order to make money to live. Vita didn't necessarily like the thought of working, but she supposed she would give it a shot. She placed an application toward a witchcraft store that was just opening (who knew that such a thing existed!), and without having to demonstrate her skills she was accepted. There she worked for the next four years before it was shut down by the local church.
Now she lives with one of her former co-workers, Amanda, whom she lived with ever since she got the job. Vita still has problems when it comes to her past, but for the most part she has decided to let it go. It wouldn't do any good to think of it; doing so would rob her of the present. So she tries to live each day to the fullest, never wavering from her positive demeanor... until she finds her life threatened yet again.
